How to Lead in a Post-Traumatic Society


Business is in a current upheaval.  The world pandemic that we are currently experiencing has caused an uncertainty like no one has seen.  Companies are closing, where some are having surprising success from the rise of racial and economic distress.  How do you encourage employees?  Leaders have to develop strategic plans to train and encourage their teams in the aspects of several areas.  How do you encourage those that feel that you, as a leader, may be part of the problem? Today’s leaders cannot continue in the same way that previous leaders have. Effective leaders would need to learn, adapt, transform, and diversify.

Good leaders adapt several styles to transform and develop their teams.  One of the most effective and positively life-altering styles is transformational leadership.  A great transformational leader would understand the intricacies of racial diversity and organizational culture.  These leaders would then use their knowledge to develop employees that have great communication skills, conflict resolution expertise, empathetic support, and adaptability. 

"How do you appease a team that feels slighted and mistreated?" 

Do you disagree with the negative behaviors that you’ve seen, learned, and experienced throughout your life?  Effective leaders need to inspire teams to produce and complete missions based on a unified vision that doesn't include aspects of race and culture.  A transformational leader has greater influence in the organization by using their moral conduct to release extrinsic factors of negative learned behaviors such as racism to create an organizational culture of dignity, trust, and respect.  This modified behavior allows the leader to engage in decision-making efforts that are more effective. 

Effective leaders encourage employees through intrinsic motivational methods that allow them to embrace their individuality.  People are traumatized by the current pandemic and several instances of racial and civil unrest throughout the world.  Effective leaders understand that while using idealistic motivational efforts, the entire team, no matter their race or background, will ultimately have a stronger sense of purpose.
